Detail Processs for preparing the assignment
Phase-1 Examine
- Get the correct, current assignment. Download it from the official IGNOU site (assignments section) or eGyanKosh, matching your exact course code and current session (July or January cycle). Old PDFs circulating on forums/WhatsApp are often from a previous session with different questions.
- Check the validity dates printed on the assignment — it states which session(s) it’s valid for and the last date of submission. Submitting outside this window can mean it’s rejected or you’re barred from that term’s exam.
- Read the whole assignment once before starting — note how many questions, which are long-answer vs short-answer, and the word limit for each. IGNOU typically splits into Section A (long answers, ~500 words) and Section B (short answers, ~250 words) or similar, but this varies by course.
Phase 2— Writing
- Cover page first. Every assignment response needs a cover page with: your name, enrolment number, programme code, course code and title, assignment code (e.g. TMA-01), study centre code and name, and session. Get this exactly right — mismatches are a common reason for rejection.
- Answer in order, and label each answer with its question number (e.g. “Q1.”) — don’t renumber or skip around, as evaluators match answers to questions by number.
- Structure long answers like a mini-essay:
- A 2-3 line introduction that restates/frames the question
- The body, developed in paragraphs or with sub-headings if the question has multiple parts
- A short conclusion (2-3 lines) tying back to the question
- Stay within the word limit — most centres deduct marks for excessively long or short answers. If a limit isn’t stated, 500 words for long answers and 250 for short answers is the usual convention.
- Add diagrams, tables, or examples where relevant (especially for commerce, science, or management courses) — this is often explicitly rewarded in the marking scheme.
Phase 4 — Formatting rules
- Use A4 ruled sheets if handwriting; single-sided only.
- Leave a margin on one side for the evaluator’s comments.
- Write your enrolment number and course code on every loose sheet — pages sometimes get separated during evaluation.
- If typing, use a clean, standard font (Times New Roman/Arial, 12pt), 1.5 line spacing, and print single-sided.
- Number your pages.
Phase 5 — Submission
- Submit at your allotted Study Centre (check your ID card/admission letter for the code) — not any random centre, unless your centre explicitly allows drop-boxes elsewhere.
- Some programmes/regional centres now accept online submission through the IGNOU portal — check whether this applies to your programme before assuming you must submit physically.
- Get an acknowledgement — either a stamped receipt, entry in a submission register, or an online confirmation. This is your only proof if it’s later claimed you didn’t submit.
- Keep a copy (photocopy or saved file) of what you submitted, in case of loss or dispute.
- Submitting the assignment on time is usually a prerequisite for appearing in the Term-End Exam for that course — this is the single most important deadline to track.
